Puerto Montt, October 12th, 2019. (radiodelmar.cl) – After a new massive salmon escape from a farming center in southern Chile, Ecoceanos Centre, that monitors the environmental and social behavior of the salmon industry, established that these exotic fish leaks in the southern ecosystems are a chronic problem, where companies do not assume any responsibility or are sanctioned by the State, due to the permissive and pro-interests of salmon companies’ legislation.
Ecoceanos Directors´, Juan Carlos Cárdenas, told Radio Universidad de Chile that the different species of salmon and trout are carnivorous species introduced into national ecosystems and are one of the main causes of the decrease in aquatic biodiversity “sweeping away the existing endemic varieties in the Austral southern zone, while affecting local trophic chains, and introduces viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases into local fauna”.
Among the main recent events, are the escape of 700,000 salmon from a farming center of the Norwegian transnational Mowi / Marine Harvest in 2018 in Calbuco; 27,500 specimens of a center of the German Group Schorghuber called Ventisquero in January 2019, and 17,000 salmon from the Chilean-American company Salmones Aysén in Calbuco, on the south of Puerto Montt.
