Latin American countries join forces against Japanese whale hunting

Since the departure of the Japanese whaling fleet towards Antarctic waters in the beginning of November, more than 60 civil organizations from 12 Latin American countries, dedicated to the marine conservation and biodiversity investigation, urgently called out to the governments that form part of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), to condemn the killings in the waters of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

In the letter, signed by Cetacean Conservation Center (Centro de Conservación Cetácea) and Ecoceanos among others, the organizations assert that the Japanese government has been incapable of showing that these whaling operations meet the requirements of the scientific investigation established by IWC, and that they don’t have the required validity required by the Scientific Commission of this international organ.

They also remember that after the ruling of the International Court of Justice in 2014, which concluded that the Japanese whaling operations in the Antarctic are illegal, the continuity of the same has been harshly condemned by the international community by various actions which highlight that this hunting violates both the IWC’s policies and international law.
