Piñera and Fisheries: Fishermen call to cancel the Fisheries Law that privatized fish

Santiago, Oct. 28, 2019 (Ecoceanos News)– In the midst of the social and political crisis that occurs in Chile, artisanal fishermen have also joined the mobilizations and assemblies in their respective communities and on the streets. One of the most heard statements from the coast is that the fisheries become the property of all Chileans again and that the Fisheries Law that privatized the fish be canceled.

This Law, known as the Longueira Law, was supported by the first Piñera government (2010-2014) and was legislated amid various acts of corruption. Several parliamentarians have been in jail for receiving money from fishing companies so they will vote in favor. A few other deputies and senators are still being investigated by the courts.
